In a significant move to bolster India’s border preparedness and strengthen defence infrastructure in the strategically sensitive western Assam region, Lieutenant General R. C. Tiwari, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Eastern Command, visited the Gajraj Corps and reviewed the operational readiness and internal security situation along the bordering areas. The visit underscored the Indian Army’s continued emphasis on maintaining a high state of vigilance and enhancing coordination in the frontier districts.

During his visit, the Army Commander assessed the progress of ongoing infrastructure development initiatives being undertaken by the formation, including connectivity, logistics, and operational facilities that support troop mobility and rapid deployment along the international border. The review comes at a time when the Eastern Command has been focusing on fortifying its capabilities to meet evolving security challenges in the Northeast.

As part of the visit, Lieutenant General Tiwari laid the foundation stone of the Lachit Borphukan Military Station at Dhubri, a landmark initiative that marks a major step in expanding the Army’s strategic footprint in lower Assam. Named after the legendary Ahom general Lachit Borphukan — revered for his courage, tactical brilliance, and indomitable spirit during the 1671 Battle of Saraighat — the new station symbolises Assam’s proud martial heritage and the enduring legacy of its defenders.

The establishment of the Lachit Borphukan Military Station is expected to significantly enhance the Army’s operational capabilities in western Assam and improve logistical efficiency across the region. It will also serve as a vital node for coordination and support operations along the border, reflecting the growing synergy between India’s defence preparedness and developmental priorities in the Northeast.

Speaking on the occasion, Lieutenant General Tiwari expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Government of Assam and the Civil Administration for their unwavering support and proactive role in facilitating the establishment of the new station. He commended the Gajraj Corps for their commitment, professionalism, and collective efforts that led to the early operationalisation of the project.

“The Lachit Borphukan Military Station stands as a testament to the partnership between the Armed Forces and the State Administration,” he said. “It embodies our shared vision of ensuring national security while contributing to the overall growth and development of the region.”

The Army Commander also interacted with senior officers and troops of the formation, appreciating their continued dedication to maintaining peace, stability, and operational readiness in the frontier zones. He emphasised the importance of preparedness and adaptability in meeting contemporary security challenges, while reiterating the Eastern Command’s focus on supporting civil authorities in disaster management, infrastructure development, and welfare initiatives.

The inauguration of the Lachit Borphukan Military Station marks more than just an infrastructural milestone — it symbolises the enduring spirit of cooperation between the Indian Army and the people of Assam, united in their commitment to safeguarding the nation’s borders and honouring the legacy of one of its greatest heroes.
