The rugged Himalayan trails of Tawang are set to come alive with the return of MONDURO 6.0, a high-altitude mountain biking championship scheduled from November 9 to 14, bringing together leading national and international riders for an extreme test of endurance, skill and adventure.

Organised by the Tawang Cycling Association (TCA) and sponsored by the Department of Tourism, Government of Arunachal Pradesh, the championship is promoted as the world’s highest Enduro mountain biking competition and India’s only event of its kind.

Held under the theme “Ghost of the Mountains“, this year’s edition will see riders navigate challenging alpine terrain, steep descents and traditional Monpa trails against the dramatic backdrop of the eastern Himalayas.

With stages beginning at elevations exceeding 14,400 feet, MONDURO 6.0 presents a formidable challenge even for experienced riders. The combination of thin mountain air, unpredictable weather, rocky tracks and demanding downhill sections makes the competition a distinctive test of technical ability and physical endurance.

Located close to the international borders with Bhutan and China, Tawang is among Arunachal Pradesh’s most spectacular mountain destinations. Known for its ancient Buddhist monasteries, rich Monpa cultural heritage and breathtaking Himalayan landscapes, the district has increasingly emerged as a destination for adventure tourism.

The historic Tawang Monastery, one of the largest Buddhist monasteries in India, and the region’s high-altitude mountain passes add to its cultural and geographical significance. The championship offers an opportunity to showcase this lesser-explored Himalayan landscape to an international sporting audience.

Over successive editions, MONDURO has evolved from a regional adventure sporting initiative into an event attracting riders from India and abroad. Its inclusion in Arunachal Pradesh’s official state events calendar has provided further institutional support for its development.

The state government, under Chief Minister Pema Khandu, has promoted adventure sports as part of its broader efforts to strengthen tourism and create opportunities for local communities. MONDURO has become one of the initiatives associated with this approach, combining competitive mountain biking with the promotion of Tawang’s natural and cultural heritage.

This year’s championship is being led by TCA President and Chief Organising Executive Advocate Sangey Tsering, alongside Race Director Dr Dukhum Magu. The organising team is responsible for race management, technical arrangements, rider safety and coordination across the challenging mountain routes.

Beyond the competition, MONDURO also highlights the potential of sustainable adventure tourism in the eastern Himalayas. Events of this nature can generate opportunities for local guides, hospitality providers, transport operators and young athletes while drawing attention to the importance of preserving the region’s fragile mountain environment.

As riders prepare to take on the formidable trails of Tawang, MONDURO 6.0 promises six days of high-altitude racing, bringing together the thrill of extreme mountain biking and the distinctive cultural landscape of Arunachal Pradesh’s Himalayan frontier.
