Arunachal’s first greenfield airport receives all-weather licence, possibility for night landings

In a significant development for Arunachal Pradesh’s aviation landscape, the Donyi Polo Airport in Itanagar is poised to commence night operations following the grant of an all-weather licence by the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu enthusiastically announced the milestone, heralding the potential for night landings at the airport.

Sharing the news on social media, Chief Minister Khandu expressed, “So happy to share a significant milestone for Arunachal Pradesh! Donyi Polo Airport has been granted an all-weather licence, unlocking the possibility for night landings.” He emphasised that this achievement represents a giant leap towards ensuring seamless air connectivity to the northeastern state, offering new avenues for growth.

Chief Minister Khandu underscored that the development aligns with the broader goal of improving connectivity in the northeastern states.

The Donyi Polo Airport, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November 2022, holds the distinction of being Arunachal Pradesh’s first greenfield airport. Reflecting the state’s cultural heritage, its name embodies reverence for the sun (‘Donyi’) and the moon (‘Polo’). Developed across an expansive 690 acres at a cost exceeding Rs 640 crore, the airport features a 2,300-metre runway, making it conducive for all-weather operations.

The modern airport terminal prioritises energy efficiency, renewable energy utilization, and resource recycling, according to an official statement. The establishment of the Donyi Polo Airport has not only enhanced connectivity in the region but has also acted as a catalyst for trade and tourism growth, providing a significant impetus to economic development.
