Meghalaya Gets First Electric Train

According to officials, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has commissioned the 22.82 km track of Dudhnai-Mendipathar railway line, resulting in the first electric train in Meghalaya.

CPRO of NFR, Sabysachi De, stated that the commissioning of the Dudhnai-Mendipathar single-line section and Abhayapuri-Pancharatna 34.59 track km double-line section on Wednesday marks a significant achievement for the Railways.

De mentioned that Mendipathar is the sole operational railway station in Meghalaya since 2014, but with the introduction of electric traction, electric locomotives can now run directly from Mendipathar, increasing the average train speed.

He added that more passenger and freight trains could operate in this section with full sectional speeds, improving punctuality. Moreover, parcel and freight trains hauled by electric locomotives from other states can now directly reach Meghalaya.
