ULFA-I Senior Member Surrenders in Assam

A high-ranking member of the banned ULFA-I group surrendered in Guwahati on Thursday, according to police reports. Bubul Chandra Baruah, who held the rank of self-styled major in ULFA-I, arrived in India from the group’s camp in Myanmar and surrendered to additional DGP Hiren Chandra Nath, as stated in an official police release.

Baruah, a native of Miripathar Bhajo village in Charaideo district, joined ULFA-I in 1997 while he was studying for a bachelor’s degree at Sonari College. He then traveled to Myanmar, where the group has its camps, to receive weapons and medical training. The police release stated that he was involved in training the group’s members in weapons and medical skills from 1998 and served as the head of the arms and medical camp at Taga in Myanmar from 2011.
