Exploring the Beauty of Meghalaya through Sailing: Highlights from the 2nd Northeast Regatta 2023

Beauty of Meghalaya through Sailing: Meghalaya, or the abode of clouds, is widely regarded as one of India’s most visually appealing states, and the tourism department is in no mood to stop in its effort to attract tourists flowing to the state.

In the purview of the same, in 2023, the much-awaited 2nd Northeast Regatta 2023 was organized by the Meghalaya Tourism Department in collaboration with the Umiam Sailing Club and Yacht Association of India to promote sailing and other activities related to diving and parasailing.

The 2nd Northeast Regatta 2023 was held from April 29 to May 2 2023. The five-day event saw participants from over ten states across India, with 12 clubs, including teams from Indian Army and Naval Services, who took part in the racing spectacle.

Apart from promoting sailing and other activities related to diving and parasailing, it is a fact that Northeast Regatta 2023 aims to enhance tourism, put Meghalaya as a location on the world sailing map, produce medalists, and empower youth by creating job opportunities and encouraging participation in workshops.

Minister-in-charge of the tourism government of Meghalaya Paul Lyngdoh stressed that the five-day event not only saw the participants of national talents but also many local youths took part in the race as the state is capable of producing not only national but also international talents in this particular sport.

Paul Lyngdoh said that Meghalaya aspires to host water sports at the national level in the years to come; hence an event of this stature will motivate the young generation to excel in this sport.

He added that the department is introducing yacht and lake cruises so that such activities accelerate the pace of tourism in the state.

In his speech, the head of the Technical Committee 2nd Northeast Regatta 2023, Colonel Vivek Kalavat, lauded the state government for the enthusiasm shown to organize the event for the first time.

Colonel Kalavat said that in the past few days, many were worried about the weather, but with well-trained and technically sound sailors, the participants took advantage of the wind.

At the end of all sailing activities, sailors and spectators alike could enjoy themselves with electrifying music concerts, which saw a diverse lineup of local, national, and international artists to make it a high-octane event.

The five-day event also allows participants to participate in nature excursions and help themselves in food and flea markets, paintball, camping spots, and many other exciting entertainments.
