India stresses border pact adherence amid Ladakh standoff

In a recent address at a think-tank, India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized the crucial importance of China’s adherence to border management agreements for fostering peace and stability along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Against the backdrop of the ongoing military standoff in eastern Ladakh, Jaishankar underscored the necessity for peace and tranquility along the border for any substantial improvement in Sino-Indian relations.

Jaishankar highlighted the Modi government’s emphasis on enhancing border infrastructure and achieving equilibrium in relations with China. He indirectly referenced past administrations, suggesting that India had not effectively leveraged international relationships in the past. Addressing the complexities of dealing with China, Jaishankar emphasized the significance of developing national power, stressing the importance of governance, resource allocation, and effective relationships in maintaining equilibrium.

The prolonged confrontation between Indian and Chinese troops in eastern Ladakh has persisted for over three years, despite disengagement efforts in certain areas. Jaishankar reiterated India’s commitment to building robust national strength, particularly in technology and supply chains, to effectively address challenges posed by China.

Emphasising the necessity of adhering to agreements, Jaishankar emphasized the fundamental importance of peace and tranquility along the border. He expressed confidence in achieving equilibrium but emphasized the need for concerted efforts in this regard.

Jaishankar highlighted the significant increase in border infrastructure investment under the Modi government, particularly in the China border areas, as evidence of India’s commitment to bolstering its capabilities.

The Ladakh border standoff, which began in May 2020, has been a focal point of tensions between India and China, escalating with violent clashes in the Galwan valley. Despite diplomatic and military dialogues, tensions persist, underscoring the challenges in Sino-Indian relations.
