Manipur Police condemns attack on senior officer, vows action

The Manipur Police Department has condemned the recent life-threatening attack on one of its senior officers, Additional SP Moirangthem Amit Singh, alongside other police personnel. The incident, which occurred in the evening of February 27, 2024, involved an armed assault on the officer’s family, property vandalism, and the abduction and assault of Additional SP Singh.

According to reports, the attack came following the interception of two stolen Ambassador cars by a team led by Additional SP Singh and inspector P. Achouba Meitei, along with other officers. One individual was apprehended in connection with the car theft, prompting the registration of a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and Arms Act.

Addressing the incident, the Manipur Police Department clarified that it remains dedicated to upholding law and order in the state and urged the public to refrain from spreading rumors and fake news. The department emphasised the importance of understanding the sequence of events leading to the attack and cautioned against misinformation that tarnishes the reputation of both the officer involved and the police force as a whole.

In a statement, the department highlighted the neutral stance of the Manipur Police and reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the lives and properties of the public. It urged citizens not to be misled by false narratives and to extend cooperation to the police in restoring peace and tranquility in the state.

Manipur Police confirms radical outfit Arambai Tenggol behind abduction

On Thursday, the Manipur Police also asserted on that the organisation is involved in a range of “anti-social activities.” These activities include assaulting civilians, seizing vehicles from both the public and government officials, and extorting money from businessmen.

Arambai Tenggol, which enjoys considerable support from the Meitei populace in the valley areas of the state, gained prominence following ethnic clashes between the Meitei and tribal Kuki-Zo communities that erupted on May 3, 2023. The group’s actions have escalated tensions in the region, culminating in an attack on a senior police officer two days prior to the police statement.

Reports indicate that members of the group  has been exploiting public sentiment under the guise of safeguarding the community while engaging in reprehensible criminal activities. In response to the targeting of Manipur Police, the statement emphasised the need to bolster security measures, with plans to increase the presence of the Indian Army and other central security forces. The statement further affirmed the continuation of combing operations to apprehend those responsible for criminal acts and urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement efforts.
