The Meghalaya Police officially flagged off the state’s contingent for the National Motorcycle Rally 2026 at a ceremony held in Shillong. Organised jointly by the Government of India and various state governments, the nationwide initiative aims to raise public awareness about the growing threat of drug abuse and trafficking.

The East Zone rally will cover thousands of kilometres, bringing together law enforcement personnel from different states before culminating at Ekta Nagar, home to the iconic Statue of Unity in Gujarat, on October 31.

The flag-off ceremony was attended by Prestone Tynsong, Minister in charge of the Home Police Department, alongside senior police officials, including Additional Director General of Police Anurag Agarwal, Inspectors General of Police, Deputy Inspectors General of Police and other senior officers.

The participating contingent comprised five riders from the Meghalaya Police, five from the Mizoram Police and four officers representing the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB).

Addressing the gathering, Home Minister Prestone Tynsong welcomed the participating riders and extended his best wishes on behalf of the state government.

Acknowledging that covering more than 3,200 kilometres would be a demanding undertaking, Tynsong said the journey reflected the seriousness with which the Central and State Governments were addressing the narcotics crisis through a comprehensive approach.

Highlighting Meghalaya’s efforts, he referred to the formation of a dedicated Anti-Narcotics Task Force headed by a Superintendent of Police to strengthen action against drug trafficking and substance abuse.

The Minister emphasised that while law enforcement agencies were working to disrupt the supply chain of illegal drugs, the government was equally committed to expanding counselling and rehabilitation facilities for individuals struggling with addiction.

He also called upon members of the Meghalaya Police and citizens across the Northeast to wish the riders a safe journey and a successful return following the national gathering later this month.

Providing details of the initiative, Inspector General of Police D.N.R. Marak explained that the motorcycle rally formed an integral part of the annual National Unity Day celebrations.

Observed every year on October 31, National Unity Day commemorates Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, independent India’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister, and his contributions to national integration.

Marak said this year’s nationwide motorcycle campaign involved participation from all Indian states, the Central Armed Police Forces and central police organisations.

For logistical coordination, the country has been divided into four geographical zones — North, Central, South and East. The East Zone contingent will cover approximately 3,340 kilometres before reaching Gujarat.

Additional Director General of Police Anurag Agarwal expressed pride in Meghalaya Police’s participation, describing the rally as an opportunity to reinforce the message of national unity while raising awareness about the dangers of drug abuse.

Recalling the legacy of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, popularly known as the Iron Man of India, Agarwal noted that the Government of India had officially designated October 31 as National Unity Day in 2014 in recognition of Patel’s contributions to national integration.

Turning to the rally’s central theme, Agarwal described drug abuse as one of the greatest threats confronting society, particularly younger generations.

Drawing attention to the regional narcotics situation, he observed that although Meghalaya was not a major drug-producing state, its geographical location made it an important transit corridor for illegal narcotics.

He cautioned that trafficking routes also contributed to local drug consumption, creating additional challenges for law enforcement agencies and communities.

Agarwal stressed the importance of stronger interstate intelligence-sharing and coordination with central investigative agencies to dismantle trafficking networks operating both within Meghalaya and beyond its borders.

Expressing confidence in the initiative, he said the rally would carry an important message of unity and collective responsibility as it travelled through towns and regions across the country, encouraging citizens to work towards a healthier and drug-free future.
