An official reported that more than 31,500 refugees who have fled from Myanmar and Bangladesh are currently residing in various regions of Mizoram.

As of January 27, 31,050 individuals from Myanmar and 541 individuals from Bangladesh have taken shelter in the northeastern state. The Bangladeshi refugees are currently accommodated in 160 temporary camps established across eight villages in the Lawngtlai district.

The majority of the Myanmar refugees, who are mainly from the Chin state, fled to Mizoram following a military coup in their country in February 2021. On the other hand, the asylum seekers from Bangladesh’s Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT) arrived in the state after a military attack against an ethnic insurgent group. Mizoram shares a porous border of 510 km with Myanmar and a boundary of 318 km with Bangladesh.

The Home Minister of Mizoram, Lalchamliana, recently informed the assembly that the state government has provided relief measures worth over Rs 3.8 crore for the Myanmar refugees and Rs 30 lakh for the Bangladeshis.
