The digital landscape of Northeast India has achieved a major milestone as the state-owned Over-The-Top platform, Hello Meghalaya, recorded over five lakh downloads and generated deep viewer engagement since its inception. Originally launched by the Government of Meghalaya in 2024, the platform has rapidly evolved into a primary driver of the state’s creative economy.
Today, the application proudly hosts a rich library of over one thousand titles and provides direct economic avenues for more than 380 local creative professionals, consisting of over 150 filmmakers and 230 digital content creators. By shifting the traditional media landscape toward an accessible digital format, this platform has successfully addressed the twin challenges faced by modern creators, which are finding a proper distribution platform and securing a steady audience.
The extraordinary growth of this digital application was the centerpiece of the inaugural Hello Meghalaya Music Awards, celebrated on World Music Day on June 21, 2026, in Shillong. Hon’ble Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma praised the application, emphasizing that a direct-to-consumer digital venue transforms traditional storytelling into a modern engine for entrepreneurship, employment, and steady economic growth.
This massive digital milestone proves that authentic cultural content can command significant market demand, bringing unique Khasi, Garo, and Jaintia stories out of the hills and onto digital screens nationwide. To commemorate this incredible journey, the event featured the screening of a special video celebrating two years of Hello Meghalaya, mapping out its historic transformation from a regional streaming experiment into an essential pillar of the state’s cultural infrastructure.
The financial and operational sustainability of this digital ecosystem is heavily reinforced by a structured four-tier government grant system that ensures a steady pipeline of high-quality regional content. The official launch of the second edition of the Grant Disbursement Booklet highlighted how these packages empower local storytellers, building on an initial grant framework launched in May 2025.
Financial assistance ranges from Category A grants of up to Rs. 35 lakh each for six feature filmmakers, to Category B grants of up to Rs. 25 lakh each for 18 select cinematic creators. Additionally, Category C allocates Rs. 20 lakh each to four distinct web series productions, while Category D equips 19 emerging filmmakers with up to Rs. 5 lakh each to develop impactful short films. This rigorous financial backing ensures that Hello Meghalaya remains a sustainable and highly lucrative digital hub for the state’s artistic youth.
Beyond serving as a digital library, the platform works in tandem with sweeping infrastructural investments designed to cultivate a localized creative workforce. Chief Minister Sangma unveiled ambitious plans to establish a dedicated Film City and a Film Institute in Shillong, alongside a state-of-the-art Music Institute in Tura.
These developments are designed to fill critical infrastructure gaps so that local creative minds can access training, production facilities, and robust platforms right at home. The government’s vision positions state support not as a mere expenditure, but as a direct investment in the dreams and economic future of the youth. This is further complemented by the ongoing success of the Chief Minister’s Grassroots Music Program, which currently sustains over seven thousand local artists and actively collaborates with creative communities to turn the state into a recognized national destination for the digital industries.
The platform has also expanded its mandate to include capacity-building initiatives and professionalization pathways that connect regional talent to national and global markets. The government highlighted how the homegrown Hello Meghalaya ecosystem has expanded its institutional reach, referencing a major 2025 partnership with the IFTI Film Exchange Programme that provided professional industry exposure and collaboration opportunities for 30 emerging filmmakers from Meghalaya and across India.
Furthermore, the state’s creative sector made its mark on the national stage by representing Meghalaya at the high-profile WAVES Summit 2025 in Mumbai, signaling a well-rounded strategy to merge public investment with mainstream entertainment industries.
This digital revolution found its perfect celebration at the inaugural Hello Meghalaya Music Awards, which honoured outstanding artistic excellence across tracks, music videos, and digital content featured on the OTT application between April 2025 and March 2026. A total of 16 exceptionally talented artists walked away with trophies across diverse musical disciplines, showcasing a blooming local music industry that spans traditional roots, contemporary pop, and modern urban soundscapes.
The evening’s top honour went to the trailblazing artist Reble, who was crowned the inaugural Icon of the Year following her national success and recognition for her musical contributions to the mainstream Bollywood film Dhurandhar. In another highly emotional moment, the band Eastern Brook, which is composed of incredibly talented visually impaired musicians, took home the award for Best Inspirational Song for their deeply moving track, Echoes of Unity. Awards were also handed out in highly competitive categories including Folk, Pop, Hip-Hop/Rap, Gospel, Original Soundtrack, Independent Artist of the Year, Best Female Artist, Best Male Artist, and Song of the Year.
Attendees at the star-studded gala were treated to spectacular live performances that showcased the depth of local talent, featuring captivating sets from the Kids Tarari Choir, Steve Jyrwa, and Amachi Sangma. The night also included an intimate interactive session with Icon of the Year winner Reble, alongside a dramatic presentation by the Khmih Creative Society, and concluded with a performance by Bending Waves, an up-and-coming musical act supported under the Grassroots Music Program. Ultimately, the event proved that through a meticulous blend of public recognition, digital distribution via the Hello Meghalaya platform, and robust financial support, Meghalaya’s musicians and storytellers are fully prepared to capture the attention of audiences across the nation and the globe.
