In a moment of immense pride for Meghalaya and India as a whole, the K C Lights Choir, a talented ensemble representing Shillong’s K C Secondary School, has delivered a triumphant performance on the global stage.
Competing at the 3rd Thailand International Choral Competition, the young singers secured two gold medals along with the prestigious Special Jury Award for the Most Inspirational Choir. The delegation of 25 gifted young musicians, who showcased their exceptional artistry among competitors from seven participating nations, returned to Shillong on the afternoon of 10 August 2026.
Upon their arrival at the Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) in Mawiong, the victorious choir received a warm public welcome organised by K C Secondary School in partnership with the Hynniewtrep Integrated Territorial Organisation (HITO), the United Hynniewtrep Movement (UHM), and the Caferacers of Shillong Motorcycle Club.
Addressing reporters during the homecoming ceremony, Principal Brian Wahlang expressed his profound gratitude and jubilation over the team’s extraordinary achievements.
He noted that, out of the nine competing categories structured by the Thailand Choral Association for the event held between 3 and 7 August, the K C Lights Choir entered two categories and emerged victorious in both.
The choir earned gold medals in each segment and was the sole choir representing India at the competition.
Reflecting on the cultural impact of their performances, Principal Wahlang highlighted that the ensemble presented three traditional songs in the Khasi language during the festival.
A particularly moving highlight unfolded during the opening ceremony, where the choir performed in Khasi and inspired the international audience to sing along to the traditional refrain ‘Hoi Kiw’.
This spontaneous exchange allowed international delegates and spectators to connect deeply with the distinct musical roots of the Khasi community.
A member of the judging panel praised the ensemble’s vocal style as uniquely pure and gentle, which stood out amidst larger international groups consisting of 40 to 45 singers delivering heavier soundscapes.
Despite competing with a leaner 25-member line-up, the choir’s discipline, vocal purity and expressive delivery earned high acclaim throughout the tournament.
This recent victory elevates the K C Lights Choir’s cumulative international record to an impressive total of ten gold medals across competitions held in five different countries.
Despite these global successes, Principal Wahlang acknowledged that financial constraints continue to pose significant challenges for future international journeys, as funding large group travel abroad remains demanding.
He expressed hope that the state government might offer formal recognition and financial backing moving forward, given that the group serves as a cultural ambassador representing both Meghalaya and India to the wider world.
Sharing her personal experience, young choir member Saphi Clarisa Mylliemngap expressed heartfelt gratitude for the opportunity to perform internationally.
She reflected on how their diligent preparation and faith helped the group overcome their initial feelings of nervousness during the high-stakes rounds.
Performing pieces such as ‘Jingwan Phai’ at the competition, she noted how empowering it was to share their indigenous heritage abroad and expressed a strong desire to continue expanding her musical journey.
As the young ensemble returns home to Shillong, their remarkable feat stands as an inspiring testament to the vibrant cultural talent and discipline thriving within the North-East region of India.
